The Rangers battled through the heat Saturday morning, earning a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the Evansville Christian Eagles. From the opening whistle, the Rangers came out on the front foot, applying pressure and doing a good job maintaining possession. Despite controlling much of the play, the Rangers struggled to find the breakthrough as the Eagles' defense held firm. That changed late in the first half. With just under five minutes remaining, Hunter Osborne created a goal all on his own. Osborne collected the ball outside the box and unleashed a shot that beat the Eagles goalkeeper, giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead. The Rangers weren't finished. With just 23 seconds remaining before halftime, Osborne turned from scorer to provider. He found Gabe Schemenaur outside the box, and Schemenaur fired a shot into the back of the net to double the Rangers' advantage heading into the break. The Rangers finished the opening half with 11 shots, while goalkeeper Dexter Meyer was called upon to make just two saves. Evansville Christian came out with renewed energy in the second half and put the Rangers under significant pressure. The Rangers' defense was forced to bend, but it never broke. The Eagles registered eight second-half shots and forced Meyer into five saves, but the Rangers held their ground and protected the clean sheet until the final whistle. The 2-0 victory moves the Rangers to 5-2 on the season. JV Earns First Victory Following the varsity match, the Rangers JV squad took the field and put together a strong performance of their own. The JV controlled possession for much of the match but had difficulty turning that control into goals. Freshman Owen Sanders finally provided the breakthrough in the first half, putting home a bouncing ball to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. The Rangers' defense did the rest, holding Evansville Christian scoreless and securing a 1-0 victory—the JV's first win of the season. The varsity Rangers will return to action Tuesday, September 8, when they travel to PAC foe Washington.
